ARMS CONTROL AND DISARMAMENT

My focus on the issue of arms control and disarmament concerned mainly the institutionalised and negotiated arms control at the multilateral level within the United Nations system. Although this type of control mechanism, especially at the bilateral level between the US and Russia fell into a state of crisis in the mid 1990s. Despite this impasse in traditional arms control, unilateral disarmament continued to take place and even reached peak levels in the mid -1990s. Global disarmament has included arms decommissioning, force demobilisation, cuts in defence production, military base closure and redevelopment and reduced military expenditures. My work at the Bonn International Center for Coversion, especially with the annual Conversion Survey, was intended to contribute to arms control and disarmament.
